When combined with differential voltage drivers, these line receivers form the transceivers for the RS-485, RS-422, and RS-232 serial digital communication systems. Differential signals are used in these communication systems because of better noise immunity and high bit-rate capacity.

    The DS78C20J is a dual CMOS compatible differential line receiver manufactured by National Semiconductor. This line receiver can be used for both balanced and unbalanced digital transmission systems. The DS78C20J complies with EIA and Federal standards. The input noise sensitivity to the noise spikes can be configured using an external capacitor. The receiver includes a 180 Ohm terminating resistor which can be used on twisted pair lines. The module has a working temperature range of -55oC to 125oC.
