Principles and advantages of semiconductor lasers

    *
    Answer

A semiconductor laser is a laser diode and is referred to as an LD.It was invented in 1960 by former Soviet scientist H. B. Basov. The structure of a semiconductor laser is generally composed of a P layer, an N layer, and an active layer forming a double heterojunction. The luminescence of a semiconductor laser is the principle of stimulated radiation using light. However, only the optical amplification function does not form a light oscillation.Just like the oscillator in an electronic circuit, only the amplification function cannot generate electrical oscillations, and a positive feedback circuit must be designed so that the power lost in the circuit is compensated by the amplified power. The advantages and disadvantages of semiconductor lasers are small size, high coupling efficiency, fast response, wavelength and size matching with fiber size, direct modulation, and good coherence.
