What is N25Q256A13EF840E?
The N25Q256A13EF840E is a serial NOR flash memory. The N25Q series is the first serial Flash memory device manufactured on 65nm NOR technology. It has inbuilt write protect mechanics using which information can be made available to the user without any rights of modification. It has high-speed SPI-compatible bus interface. It also features execute-in-place (XIP) functionality. Execute-in-place (XIP) functionality is a method of executing programs directly from long term storage rather than copying it into RAM. XIP mode requires only an address to output data. Which improve random access time and eliminate the need to shadow code onto RAM for fast execution.
Pin Configuration
PIN NUMBER | PIN SYMBOL | PIN TYPE | SYMBOL NAME |
1 | S# | Input | Chip Select |
DESCRIPTION:S# is HIGH, the device is deselected and DQ1 is at High-Z.S# LOW place device in the active power mode. After power-up, a falling edge on S# is required prior to the start of any command.
2 | DQ1 | Outputand I/O | Serial data |
DESCRIPTION:Transfers data serially out of the device. Data is shifted out on the falling edge of the clock. DQ1 is used for input/output during the following operations: DUAL INPUT FAST PROGRAM, QUAD INPUT FAST PROGRAM, DUAL INPUT EXTENDED FAST PROGRAM, and QUAD INPUT EXTENDED FAST PROGRAM. When used for input, data is latched on the rising edge of the clock.
3 | W# | ControlInput | Write protect |
DESCRIPTION:W# can be used as a protection control input or in QIO-SPI operations. When in extended SPI with single or dual commands, the WRITE PROTECT function is selectable by the voltage range applied to the signal. If voltage range is low (0V to VCC), the signal acts as a write protection control input. The memory size protected against PROGRAM or ERASE operations is locked as specified in the status register block protect bits 3:0.
VPP | Power | Supply voltage
DESCRIPTION:If VPP is in the voltage range of VPPH, the signal acts as an additional power supply.
DQ2 | Input and I/O | DQ2 | |
DESCRIPTION:When in QIO-SPI mode or in extended SPI mode using QUAD FAST READ commands, the signal functions as DQ2, providing input/output.
4 | VSS | Ground | Ground |
DESCRIPTION:Reference for the VCC supply voltage.
5 | DQ0 | Input and I/O | Serial data |
DESCRIPTION:Transfers data serially into the device. It receives command codes, addresses, and the data to be programmed. Values are latched on the rising edge of the clock. DQ0 is used for input/output during the following operations: DUAL OUTPUT FAST READ, QUAD OUTPUT FAST READ, DUAL INPUT/OUTPUT FAST READ, and QUAD INPUT/OUTPUT FAST READ. When used for output, data is shifted out on the falling edge of the clock.
6 | C | Input | Clock |
DESCRIPTION:Provides the timing of the serial interface. Commands, addresses, or data present at serial data inputs are latched on the rising edge of the clock. Data is shifted out on the falling edge of the clock.
7 | HOLD# | Control Input | HOLD |
DESCRIPTION:Pauses any serial communications with the device without deselecting the device. DQ1 (output) is High-Z. DQ0 (input) and the clock are “Don’t Care.” To enable HOLD, the device must be selected with S# driven LOW. HOLD# is used for input/output during the following operations: QUAD OUTPUT FAST READ, QUAD INPUT/OUTPUT FAST READ, QUAD INPUT FAST PROGRAM, and QUAD INPUT EXTENDED FAST PROGRAM.
DQ3 | Input and I/O | DQ3 | |
DESCRIPTION:When in quad SPI mode or in extended SPI mode using quad FAST READ commands, the signal functions as DQ3, providing input/output. HOLD# is disabled and RESET# is disabled if the device is selected.
8 | VCC | Power | Device core power supply |

WHERE TO USE N25Q256A13EF840E?
N25Q256A13EF840E IS highest performance, most secure, low-pin-count Serial NOR Flash Memory most preferable for embedded system. NOR Flash is the ideal memory for code storage in embedded systems due to its fast-random read performance. This performance also supports XIP (eXecute In Place) functionality which allows host controllers to execute code directly from the NOR Flash Memory without needing to first copy the code to a RAM. N25Q256A13EF840E is most suitable for Automotive Infotainment Systems, Automotive Cluster Systems and Gaming Console.
How N25Q56A13EF840E work?
As shown in Fig.3, N25Q56A13EF840E can be used with Arduino Mini. VCC supply voltage can be provided from the Arduino board or external source. VSS is connected to ground. S# is connected to D9 and need to drive the N25Q56A13EF840E in active mode by low logic at D9. C is clock signal, connected to D6. At D6 pin clock signal for N25Q56A13EF840E need to be generated. DQ1, DQ2 and DQ3 is DATA pins of N25Q56A13EF840E, and connected to D8,D7 and D6.
