An RTC (real time clock) is an integrated circuit which implements a very accurate clock for time keeping in digital circuits. The RTCs are very widely used in computers, laptops, mobile phones, servers, and other embedded systems. In fact they are used in all those digital circuits which need to keep accurate time. One of the major advantages of RTC is that they include an alternate source of power and keep on functioning even when the main system’s power is shut off. The alternate power source used to be Lithium batteries in older RTCs however super-capacitors are mainly used now-a-days. The other advantages of RTC include low power consumption and accurate time keeping. RTCs use a 32.768 kHz crystal oscillator for clock pulse generation. The typical accuracy of these clocks is around 5 parts per million. Apart from standalone ICs, RTCs are also commonly integrated into microcontroller packages.
What is DS1307Z+?
The DS1307Z+ is a serial RTC (real time clock) manufactured by Maxim Integrated. This RTC IC features BCD clock/calendar and 56 bytes of NV SRAM. The address and data are communicated to the IC via I2C interface. The clock/calendar provides accurate information about seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month and year. The IC also implements compensation for leap years as well as months less than 31 days. The clock is capable of operating in 12-hour and 24-hour modes with AM/PM indication. This RTC also implements power sensing circuit which detects the power cut-off and switches the system over backup power source.
Pin Configuration
The pin configuration of the DS1307Z+ real time clock is given in the table below:
