What is the significance of nominal power?

In the application of resistors, the temperature rises due to the flow of current to generate heat, which is often referred to as generating thermal energy or thermal power. Thermal power will lose electrical power and dissipate as heat, a phenomenon called resistor power dissipation.
The smaller the current through the resistor, the smaller the thermal power generated and the less power dissipated. The passing current is large, the thermal power generated is large, and the dissipation power is also large. But thermal power and dissipation power are two different concepts. Thermal power is to generate heat and increase the temperature of the resistor. The dissipated power is to dissipate heat, which reduces the temperature of the resistor.
If the thermal power generated by the resistor is greater than its dissipation rate, the heating will be greater than the cooling, making the resistor hot and hot. When the temperature is too high, the resistor will be burnt and damaged. To avoid this, the nominal power of the resistor is specified. The nominal power of the resistance value refers to the maximum thermal power that the resistor can withstand within a specific ambient temperature range when the atmospheric pressure is 650-800 mmHg.
Nominal power is a comprehensive parameter related to thermal power and dissipation power. If the combined thermal power of the resistor heating and cooling is less than the nominal power, it can work safely. If the comprehensive thermal power is greater than the nominal power, the stable operation of the resistor will be affected and its service life will be shortened. In severe cases, it will be quickly burned. In this sense, the nominal power is the ability of the resistor to withstand thermal power.
The ability of a resistor to withstand thermal power is related to many factors. If the resistor body and packaging materials conduct heat quickly, the surface is in contact with the air, or the air flow is large, the heat dissipation effect of the resistor is good, and the maximum power it can withstand will be higher. Therefore, when designing circuits and selecting resistors, it is necessary to fully estimate the working conditions of the resistors and use the nominal power reasonably.
In the application of the resistor, there should usually be enough insurance margin, so that the actual withstand power is about 30% of the nominal power. In this way, the overheating, deterioration and burning of the resistor can be avoided, and the noise of the circuit can also be reduced, so that the circuit design is perfect and the operation is stable and reliable.
The nominal power of the resistor is usually also called the rated power. The basic unit is watts, abbreviated as watts, and is represented by the letter W. People often divide resistors into various specifications according to the nominal power, so as to arrange the production or selection of resistors. There are many specifications of nominal power, commonly used are l/16W, 1/8W, 1/4W, l/2W, 1W, 2W, 3W, 5W, lOW, 20W and so on.
The thermal power of high-power resistors is relatively large. In addition to making them as large as possible during production, the pins are generally made into the form of metal sheet brackets to facilitate the heat dissipation of the resistors.
