Selection notes: This device has the smallest footprint and lowest profile of the three. It suits compact designs with low-voltage inputs, but cannot connect directly to a 12 V supply. For higher input voltages, evaluate an upstream conversion stage or one of the other two modules.
Design Considerations
- Confirm the input supply and output configuration
Check the full upstream voltage range and allow adequate input-to-output headroom for buck conversion. With an external resistor divider, the TPSM82903 provides an adjustable output from 0.6 V to 5.5 V. VSET offers 16 presets within 0.4–5.5 V; this does not mean the output is continuously adjustable from 0.4 V.
- Match the mode and frequency to the load
The TPS82130 and TPSM82823 support automatic power-save operation at light load; mode transitions depend on the load and input/output conditions. TPSM82823A is the forced-PWM version. The TPSM82903 supports mode configuration, but forced PWM increases light-load power consumption.
The listed frequencies are nominal; actual switching frequency varies with operating conditions. TPSM82903 frequency and mode combinations also depend on output voltage. For 1 MHz automatic PFM/PWM operation, check TI’s supplementary application note for the applicable input, output, and load ranges. Do not assume every combination supports 3 A.
- Evaluate power consumption and temperature rise under relevant conditions
The listed quiescent currents are typical values measured at 25 °C with the devices not switching. The input voltage for these measurements is 12 V for the TPS82130 and TPSM82903 and 5 V for the TPSM82823. These values do not represent the total no-load input current of the power supply circuit. Continuous output capability also depends on efficiency and thermal derating under actual operating conditions.
The TPS82130’s −40 °C to +110 °C range is the module operating temperature specified for a 100,000-hour lifetime. For continuous operation at 125 °C, the specified maximum lifetime falls to 50,000 hours. The other two devices specify recommended junction temperatures of −40 °C to +125 °C. None of these ranges is a full-load ambient temperature rating.
- Check land patterns, external components, and startup requirements
The three modules have different pin configurations and are not drop-in replacements. The TPS82130 and TPSM82903 share the same package length and width, but their land patterns and pin functions still require review. Follow each datasheet’s recommendations for input and output capacitors and copper areas for heat dissipation. For an adjustable startup ramp or voltage tracking, evaluate the TPS82130 or TPSM82903, both of which have an SS/TR pin.
